FPL experiment review

Gameweek 7 Review: GW6 to GW7

The plan was to keep a cool head. Three transfers, another eight-point hit and a goalkeeper gamble later, this was a week to question my decisions rather than celebrate them. Figures below are a provisional snapshot checked on 19 October.

Three transfers, a keeper gamble and another eight-point hit

David reviews Saka Potatoes in GW7: Cherki, Calafiori and Joao Pedro transfers, eight points in hits, Kinsky over Raya and a provisional no-change comparison.

  • FPL's saved history shows 57 points before hits, 49 net and 450 season points; GW7 is not yet marked final.
  • The three incoming players returned eight against the outgoing players' 10: a 10-point loss after hits.
  • The live lineup estimate is 52 net versus 51 for keeping the GW6 setup, with expected substitutions included.

FPL experiment notes

My notes

A cool head, until Thursday evening

After a week of overthinking, I decided to keep a cool head this time. It did not last. The TallyKind model was pointing towards a defensive change: moving Aina on, or switching Gabriel for the in-form Calafiori. I initially went my own way and brought in Cherki for Cunha. With City facing Ipswich and Cherki's returns this season catching my eye, it felt like an aggressive move worth making.

Then the usual Thursday-evening panic arrived. Gabriel went out for Calafiori to free up the budget for Wissa to become Joao Pedro. My quiet week had become three transfers and another eight points spent in hits.

I also made a controversial goalkeeper call, starting Kinsky ahead of Raya. Spurs were at home to an in-form Coventry, so even at the time it felt rash. Sometimes a point of difference pays off. This one did not: Kinsky returned two while Raya's nine stayed on my bench.

Overall, a poor week. Haaland's captain return and Calvert-Lewin's points helped, but the transfers and goalkeeper gamble left plenty to regret. Next week, perhaps I can keep the compulsions to a minimum. Or perhaps it is time for a Free Hit.

    What the three transfers returned

Player points are from the GW7 live feed. Hits are deducted once from the combined gain; captaincy and substitutions are not credited to the transfers.

Live points versus making no changes

Both scenarios use the same live GW7 player scores and expected legal autosubs. The unchanged team keeps the GW6 lineup and Gross as captain. These are estimates, not final FPL totals.

    Team outline

    GW7 selected team

The selected XI was 4-3-3. Haaland's 26 includes captaincy; these cards total 59 before hits. Cherki has no minutes, so Yalcouye's expected one-point autosub takes the live estimate to 60, or 52 after hits. FPL's saved history still shows 57 before hits.

    What kept the week afloat

    • Haaland returned 13 base points and 26 as captain. That armband added eight more than leaving it on Gross, who scored five.
    • Calvert-Lewin moved from the bench into the XI and returned nine points.
    • De Cuyper and Calafiori each scored six, although Calafiori still trailed Gabriel's eight.

    Where I lost ground

    • The transfers lost two player points before the eight-point hit, making a 10-point immediate loss after hits.
    • Starting Kinsky for two instead of Raya for nine cost seven points. This was a lineup decision, not a transfer.
    • Cherki did not play. Yalcouye's one point is only an expected replacement until FPL settles the gameweek.
    • The saved overall ranking fell by 793,372 places. One captain return did not make this a good week.

    Reading the numbers

The captain helped; the transfers did not

Cherki, Calafiori and Joao Pedro returned eight player points between them. Cunha, Gabriel and Wissa returned 10. That is two points lost on the players, then another eight in hits: a 10-point immediate transfer loss. It says nothing yet about their next three or five gameweeks.

The whole-team comparison tells a different story because I also changed the lineup and captain. Using the live scores, keeping the GW6 setup would produce 51 with a legal autosub for Aina. The GW7 setup is estimated at 60 before hits, including Yalcouye for Cherki, or 52 net. That narrow one-point advantage is not a transfer success: captaincy and selection are part of it.

This review was checked against the public FPL entry, history, picks, transfers and GW7 live-points feeds on 19 October 2026. FPL had not marked GW7 finished or data checked. Its saved history showed 57 before hits, 49 net and 450 season points, while the player feed gave the newer estimate above. The two are deliberately shown separately; the live estimate must not be added to the saved season total as though it were settled. No chip was used.

      FAQs

      Gameweek 7 Review: GW6 to GW7 FAQs

Why does the review show both 49 and 52 net points?

49 is the saved FPL history score after the eight-point hit. 52 is the estimate from live player scores, captaincy and an expected Yalcouye autosub. GW7 was still provisional when checked on 19 October, so these are labelled separately rather than presented as one final result.

Was Raya to Kinsky a fourth transfer?

No. Both goalkeepers were already in the squad. Kinsky started instead of Raya, so the seven-point difference belongs to lineup selection, not the three-transfer comparison.

      Next deadline

Fewer compulsions, or a Free Hit?

That is the question I am taking into next week. The squad needs a plan, not another round of Thursday-evening panic.
