Assumptions

Calculation notes

  • Defaults are set in the browser using the visitor's local clock and IANA time zone where available.
  • Time zone conversion uses the JavaScript Intl time zone database available in the user's browser or server runtime.
  • If a local clock time falls inside a daylight-saving transition, the browser runtime resolves the nearest valid instant.

Timezone handling

How the conversion avoids fixed offsets

Named time zones are used so daylight-saving changes can be handled for the selected date.

Instant conversion

The converter uses named IANA time zones rather than fixed hour offsets, so daylight-saving changes are handled by the browser/runtime date engine.

It shows the source and destination time together and plots selected places on the map for orientation.

Timezone pathsource local date and time + source timezone -> instant in time -> destination timezone display

London to New York

Example: London to New York

  • Source: London
  • Destination: New York
  • Date and time: selected by user

Result: The output shows the equivalent local time in both places using the correct GMT, BST or daylight-saving offset for that date.

Named time zones are safer than manually adding or subtracting hours, especially around clock changes.

Why named zones matter

  • Timezone rules can change by jurisdiction, so current browser/runtime timezone data matters.
  • For flights, broadcasts or legal deadlines, check the original source schedule as well.
